I experienced cold sores as a child but haven’t had a cold sore in twenty years. My partner has hsv2. If I perform oral sex on him, will I contract oral hav2?

Hi, thanks for your question. Cold sores are very common and this means you have been exposed to herpes and so have some antibodies in your immune system that can help protect you against getting another type of herpes.  HSV type 1 is commonly found both around the mouth and on the genitals. HSV 2 can commonly be found around the genitals but can also be around the mouth as well. If your partner had a blood test that shows HSV2, the blood test does not tell where the herpes is on the body. If your partner has genital HSV 2 and you have had cold sores in the past, then it is unlikely that you will contract HSV 2 from his genitals through oral contact. It is also unlikely that you will transfer your HSV type from your mouth to his genitals as he has some antibody protection against herpes as has already been exposed.
